ACEhp CPD Pulse Points July Edition: Designing Better Activities

In April, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) began a weekly series of webinars called "CPD Pulse Points." In each session, Chitra Subramanian, current ACEhp president, has a conversation with a guest about a topic relevant to healthcare CPD today. Registration is free for ACEhp members and $25 for non-members. Each session is recorded and made available for learners who are unable to attend the live meeting, so if any of the sessions sound interesting to you, they are available for viewing in full.

There were five Thursdays in July, so there were five CPD Pulse Points sessions. The first was a carryover from the June theme of burnout and wellness. The second focused on leadership and the big picture. The other three focused on different aspects of instructional design.

  • The principles of strategic planning apply to program planning and instructional design. Start with the end in mind and then plan curricula and individual courses based on that. This may make it easier to design activities that address higher outcomes levels. What is the community health problem to be addressed? What are the patient outcomes to be addressed? What are the performance gaps? As planners, we should be identifying gaps at some point in the process. If we start with the desired outcome and work backwards, we can create better, more impactful activities
  • The hardest people to teach are the people who already know everything, or at least think that they do. By reframing the reasons for education, we can give these learners a reason to participate. How do they compare to their peers? Do they really know as much as they think they do? How can they learn by helping to teach others?
  • It takes a team to make a good asynchronous online course. In order to make it interactive, you need someone with tech know-how, but you also need buy in from your faculty. While we can quickly move a live activity to an online format, the process of making a course that learners can take at their own pace and that will also be effective takes time
