ACEhp CPD Pulse Points June 2021 Edition: Wisdom and Authenticity

In April 2020, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) began a weekly series of webinars called "CPD Pulse Points." In each session, Chitra Subramanian, former ACEhp president, has a conversation with a guest about a topic relevant to health care continuing professional development (CPD) today. Access is free for ACEhp members. Non-members can attend the live sessions or purchase a recording for $5. Each session is recorded and made available for learners who are unable to attend the live meeting, so if any of the sessions sound interesting to you, they are available for viewing in full.

In June, the CPD Pulse Points series continued its focus on leadership. While the overall focus continues to be on the world of health care CPD, the content applies across the spectrum of work and leadership.

Key Takeaways:
  • 1.) Wisdom comes with experience. It is what allows you to know how well an educational intervention might work simply because you've tried it before and succeeded or tried it before and failed
  • 2.) Leadership is a relationship that should be built on trust. By being their authentic selves, leaders can build trusting relationships with their teams. This means being the same person at work as at home or online
  • 3.) Authenticity requires vulnerability. An authentic leader knows how to ask for help, how to own up to their mistakes, and how to admit what they do not know. This also serves to show the team that they are safe to do the same
  • 4.) Authentic leadership helps build a strong team that can hold itself together, even if the leader is removed
