ACEhp CPD Pulse Points March 2021 Edition: Applying Lessons from 2020
In April 2020, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) began a weekly series of webinars called "CPD Pulse Points." In each session, Chitra Subramanian, former ACEhp president, has a conversation with a guest about a topic relevant to health care continuing professional development (CPD) today. Access is free for ACEhp members. Non-members can attend the live sessions for $5 or purchase a recording for $25. Each session is recorded and made available for learners who are unable to attend the live meeting, so if any of the sessions sound interesting to you, they are available for viewing in full.
After a somewhat lengthy hiatus, the CPD Pulse Point series returned in March. A long-term focus of future CPD Pulse Points will be expertise, and the month began with a session on that topic. But the rest of the month returned, in a way, to the lessons that we learned from 2020, with an eye to how we can do better going forward.
Key Takeaways:- Cultural awareness is about more than race or ethnicity. In health care, we find different cultures between different professions or even between specialties within a single profession. When designing online activities, we need to be aware of not only these differences but also of accessibility so that normally marginalized populations are included.
- Now that the world of health care has moved more online, we shouldn't expect it to go back. In addition to online education, there has been an increase in telemedicine. As educators, we need to help our learners improve how telemedicine is delivered, just as we have worked and continue to work to improve how online education is delivered.
- A continuing challenge for us as educators is evaluation. It is fairly easy to evaluate knowledge gain when providing online education. How do we evaluate performance or patient care? How do we educate and evaluate the performance of a team?
- Is it better to be an expert at one thing or competent at several things? This question holds not only for our learners but also for ourselves and how we build our teams of CPD professionals. There isn't a right answer, but there may be a right answer for you and your team.
