ACEhp CPD Pulse Points September 2021 Edition: Evidence-Based Learning
In April 2020, the Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions (ACEhp) began a weekly series of webinars called "CPD Pulse Points." In each session, Chitra Subramanian, former ACEhp president, has a conversation with a guest about a topic relevant to health care continuing professional development (CPD) today. Access is free for ACEhp members. Nonmembers can attend the live sessions or purchase a recording for $5. Each session is recorded and made available for learners who are unable to attend the live meeting, so if any of the sessions sound interesting to you, they are available for viewing in full.
As part of accredited education, we stress the importance of evidence-based medicine. One of the CPD Pulse Points sessions in September looked at how we can apply the same standards to our own practice, with a particular focus on the world in which we all now live: online education.

1. Learning requires a certain amount of stress and difficulty in order for it to be effective. Testing, be it in the form of a pretest, a posttest, or a formative exam, uses stress to aid learning. Interleaving, the mixing of concepts or topics as opposed to grouping topics into blocks, is difficult, but effective in the long run.
2. Multimedia presentations are more effective than a single media format and are well suited to online education.
3. Pushing out refresher content on a drip schedule can improve retention. Combining this spaced repetition with testing creates even better results.
4. Examples should be concrete and abstract. It's easy to use just one or the other, but it's best to offer learners both.
5. Even though education has moved online and may be asynchronous, the same evidence base applies. Active learning is better than passive learning. It is up to us as planners to create a space where learners feel safe and supported.The following are the sessions held in September 2021.
